Sister Sledge, BCI - MUSIC - SISTER SLEDGE/FAMILY AFFAIR
Description:
Four sisters from Philadelphia are ranked among the top family acts of modern musical history. Debbie, Joni, Kathy and Kim were born to a musical family in the late 1950's. With the encouragement of their mother, who was a professional entertainer, they began singing at church. Soon after they appeared together at civic and political events billed as "Mrs. William's Grandchildren," a name taken for their grandmother, Viola Williams, a former opera singer. They first recorded as "Sister Sledge" in 1971 and continued releasing material in various styles throughout the 1970's. They achieved worldwide success with the anthem-like "We Are Family" which was embraced by many groups as a theme song.
